Future-proofing brand visibility in the age of AI

Kevin Lee speaks with Debra Aho Williamson, founder of Sonata Insights and publisher of The AI Ad Economy, about how AI is reshaping the way consumers discover brands and make purchase decisions, and what that means for marketers, agencies, and publishers.

Debra explains why she created The AI Ad Economy after seeing tools like ChatGPT evolve from simple utilities into powerful decision engines that influence what people buy. She notes that AI assistants are quickly becoming media and advertising environments in their own right. OpenAI’s ambition to reach $100 billion in ad revenue by 2030 is a clear signal that AI platforms intend to be major advertising players, on a much faster timeline than Google or Meta achieved.

The discussion explores the current “wild west” of AI visibility (sometimes called GEO), where there’s little guidance on how brands can reliably “show up” in AI answers. Debra highlights emerging best practices—clear, scrapable content structure; strong presence in communities like Reddit and LinkedIn; and an emphasis on how AI talks about your brand, not just if it mentions you. She also shares findings from her research with the IAB on the “AI ad gap,” which shows that younger consumers are more skeptical of AI-generated ads than many executives assume, and that transparent disclosure often improves or maintains purchase intent.

For publishers and media companies, Debra underscores the risks of AI-driven zero-click experiences, where content is surfaced without necessarily driving traffic back. She points to strategies like events, segmented newsletters, and direct audience relationships as ways to reduce dependence on third-party platforms. Looking ahead, Debra argues that industry players and trade associations should take the lead on AI standards and disclosure, rather than waiting for fragmented regulations.

Her core message to marketers: understand how your audience is already using AI, treat AI platforms as full-funnel environments, start testing AI-native ad opportunities now, and build a visibility strategy that assumes traditional search will play a smaller role over time.
