Some conversations neatly connect trends many of us are
sensing. This one, with Carl Grant III, of AcumenX, brings together
an abundance mindset, relationship‑first business development,
and AI as a force multiplier.
Carl has spent decades in professional services BD, helping
grow a major law firm from about $310M to over $2B in annual revenue.
He’s also the author of “How to Live the Abundant Life.” Interestingly,
that book didn’t start as a life framework at all. It began as a business
development manual, until his daughter told him the last third didn’t work for
introverts, retirees, or stay‑at‑home parents. He scrapped and rewrote it,
turning it into a broader philosophy on building a “rich life” rooted in
relationships.
A key theme of our discussion is Carl’s rejection
of transactional selling. Instead of asking “How do I close this?” he
focuses on “What can I do to help you?” That can mean steering prospects to
other providers, connecting them to opportunities, or simply investing in the
relationship with no immediate payoff. Over time, that others‑first approach
builds trust, loyalty, and ultimately better business.
We also dig into AI’s role. Carl is clear that AI won’t
write your book or replace your judgment, but it can be a powerful “ghost
editor” and BD co‑pilot. He now dictates chapters and uses AI to
shape them into drafts and deploys AI agents to scan and prioritize prospects
so his human time goes to the highest‑value conversations. His son pushes this
further, using AI to mine LinkedIn and CRM data and book meetings while he’s at
the gym.
Taken together, Carl’s perspective points to a future where the winning edge comes from human generosity amplified by smart AI tools, in business and in life.
