April 21, 2016: Facebook is reportedly suffering from a decline in original content sharing — a dire situation called “context collapse” that threatens to put a ceiling on its global ambitions unless corrected.
Do Facebook’s users believe their posts are worth pennies, dollars, or zilch?
One curative step we recommended Facebook consider taking was to pay creators for their posts, and so it was interesting to read a report in The Verge suggesting that Facebook may be doing exactly that. In a poll sent to the author of the Verge article and (presumably) to others content creators on Facebook, specific questions were asked about the form that a theoretical user compensation mechanism should take. Should it be a tip jar? An opportunity to share revenue via co-sponsored posts? A donate option?
But one important set of questions was left out of Facebook’s poll. These questions pertain to how Facebook users rate the values of their own original intellectual contributions to the social networking giant. How highly do they rate their own contributions? Do they believe their posts are worth pennies or dollars? Or zilch? Would they feel satisfied with a “tip” jar or would they feel better if they were put into a more systematic system of reward? How about tiny, microscopic stock options for each original contribution (dependent on performance, of course)?
To fill the gap, Didit is polling its own user base (that’s you) to establish some initial baseline benchmarks for personal monetization goals on Facebook.
Please take the poll, which asks whether you’re willing to continue posting for just a few cents — or whether you’d only do so if you’re offered the big bucks!
We thank you for your data and will post a follow-up article once we’ve received enough results to constitute a valid sample.
