June 15, 2015: I’ve written in the past about how brands should begin to use Tumblr as a community-driven, creative way to embrace their voice and audience. If you’ve joined the Tumblr community recently, congratulations! We’ll be sharing optimization tips on our blog as we grow our own Tumblr page. If you’re still unsure about Tumblr’s value, here’s another reason we love this network: customizable mobile layouts.
Tumblr mobile pages were introduced in 2014, but many brands didn’t take advantage of the change. Mobile-friendliness continues to grow in importance, with more online views coming from mobile devices than ever before. If you haven’t yet updated your mobile page, it’s very simple… and the results may be better looking than your own website! You’ll find the mobile layout settings within the “settings” tab on your home screen.
Within the settings, Tumblr allows you to change the header, description, font, and icon that will appear when mobile users visit your site. We chose an image, font and color scheme that matched our desktop layout, but you can make your mobile site completely unique if you desire.
To create our header image, we used an image that is 1240 x 700 pix. As long as your image has a roughly 16:9 (“widescreen”) aspect ratio, it should be fine. Also keep in mind that the logo space offers either a circle or a square, so make sure you have a logo that will fit into that given space. Besides mobile traffic, optimizing this page is important because it’s also viewable within Tumblr. When logos are hovered over, within Tumblr, desktop users see a preview of your page and the last three posts using the formatting that you choose for mobile. This is important for new users discovering you within the community.
Any links that you have in your description will function on this mobile site. Didit has a company description (try to keep it short!), which also includes links to some content and our home page URL.
The beauty and simplicity of the mobile site is another reason to have a Tumblr blog. Unlike WordPress, where it’s necessary to have a webmaster that is fluent in HTML and add-ons, Tumblr allows those of us with less coding knowledge to play around with beautiful themes and maintain a mobile-friendly presence.
